Every spring Bedford announces its town-wide garage sales. This activity usually bring in a lot of outsiders to our community. The biggest attraction on this day is the Red Brick Run. The Red Brick Run can either be walked or ran over a distance of ten kilometers, five kilometers, or two miles, whatever is preferred by the athlete. It starts and ends at the Taylor County Courthouse with the course varying on the distance running/walking.
A wonderful landscaping event that has been added to Bedford’s list is Bedford In Bloom. It is an entire day dedicated to the beautiful flowers Bedford offers. Bedford In Bloom doesn’t feature only flowers though, but an array of events. The day gets kicked off with a pancake breakfast and then a ping-pong drop. The ping-pong drop consists of ping-pong balls with different merchants on them that are dropped into the streets of Bedford. The finder of the ball takes it to the merchant and receives a gift. Bedford brings in speakers to inform people of different aspects of the environment. Bedford In Bloom also features a band and dance at night. Some of the biggest attractions at Bedford In Bloom are the Blazin’ BBQ Bash, a cook-off, and the Wine Village, a section featuring taste testing of different types of Iowa wineries. The day is topped off with a parade to honor the day.
Bedford has an annual 4th of July celebration. Every year there is a parade downtown. Many people enter the parade, school organizations, businesses, county officials, community members, and many more. The parade is enjoyed by many spectators from all over. After the parade there is a bbq. Also every year fireworks are shot over the lake at Lake of Three Fires. For anyone who hasn’t seen fireworks shot over a lake, come experience it. The lake offers a mirror image of the fireworks. Besides the fireworks beauty spectators are able to marvel at the marvelous landscaping. Viewers of the fireworks enjoy the opportunity of sitting on the beach or the lake front close to their loved ones.
In 1866 Harness Racing was featured for the first time, and people from all walks of life walked, rode horseback, came in teams & wagons, or by rail to attend this grand event for one day of excitement. Harness racing is a form of horse-racing in which the horses race in a specified gait. They usually pull two-wheeled carts called sulkies, although races to saddle are still occasionally conducted. Harness racing continues to be conducted at the Taylor County Fairgrounds in Bedford. Our track has been known as the best harness track in southwest Iowa since 1876 and one of the best of five tracks in Iowa. Many of the harness horses, owners, trainers and breeders of Taylor County have been inducted into the Iowa's Racing Hall of Fame.
The Bedford Area Development Center hosted its first annual downtown trick or treating event in Oct 2007, and thought it was such a success that it has become a tradition . Trick or Treaters begin at the Garland Hotel and end at the Legion. Businesses and organizations from around town come and pass out candy to participants. There is a free meal, costume contest, door prizes, Halloween movie, fortune teller, and so much more.
