They were called "The Fire Nation." The
Ottawa, Chippewa and Pottawattamie tribes formed
a loose confederacy know as the "Three Fires."
As the story goes, the three fires were kept
burning, as a signal or warning of invading
tribes for as long as the three tribes stayed
together. Today, the Lake of Three Fires
Park is reportedly located in the vicinity of
where these three tribes camped.
The
park began on 380 acres that had been purchased
by local contributions and donated to the State
of Iowa. The area has since grown to
approximately 695 acres with the addition of 380
acres, used for upland game hunting, that
borders the park.
The
park consists of a beach house, a sand beach,
picnic areas, picnic shelters, six rental cabins
and the Park Ranger's house and shop complex
which today has the same rustic architecture
intact. In 1998, an extensive program to
upgrade the facilities began, beginning with the
beach house where the original beams and stone
were retained and a full kitchen was added. The
stone shelterhouse in the picnic area was then
restored, an additional shelterhouse was built
and in the summer 0f 2002 the six rental cabins
were remodeled. The rustic amenities of the
original construction are enhanced by the
addition of modern comforts for present day park
users. The cabins are available for rental
the year round and are equipped with bath, heat
and air, refrigerator, microwave, table, chairs
and futons. Each cabin will accommodate 6
people.
Over the years, two campgrounds with 30
electrical sites and 69 non-electrical sites and
modern shower house facilities in each camping
area have been added. In addition, an Equestrian
campground was added with 8 electrical sites - 6
sites have hitching rails and 2 have corrals. In
addition, 16 non-electrical campsites were
added- 13 with hitching rails and 3 with
corrals.
The
Lake of Three Fires, along with camping and
picnic areas, offers fishing and boating (no
wake speed) - a sandy beach with swimming - 2
playgrounds - sand volleyball court - horseshoe
pitching pits- 8 miles of trails for hiking,
horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling
and Bird Watching. The trails are interwoven through
mature woodlands and grasslands around the lake
that provide excellent wildlife viewing.
The
beachhouse - shelterhouses - and rental cabins
may be rented for family reunions, weddings,
picnics, business retreats, etc. The Lake of
Three Fires is open the year round for your
enjoyment. Come to the lake for a day, a
weekend, a week or as long as you can vacation.
You will be rewarded with the opportunity to
enjoy nature at its finest.
